There are many determined and talented, low-income students in Nigeria who only require financial resources and access to information to better their educational future.
For the 11th year, the United States Embassy, Nigeria seeks to identify academically qualified and highly motivated, low-income students in Nigeria to join the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program (OFP).
OFP’s mission is to assist talented and determined, low-income students who are good candidates for financial assistance from U.S. colleges and universities but lack the financial resources to cover the up-front cost of obtaining admission.
OFP works closely with students through regularly scheduled meetings and seminars to assist them throughout the application process to secure admission and scholarships to attend colleges and universities in the United States.
OFP finances the cost of the application process, including registration fees for required standardized examinations and provides free membership to the U.S. EducationUSA Advising Center for its participants.
OFP expects a sincere commitment from the students to give their energy and time to the program so that they may achieve their dreams of study in the United States.
Applicants are welcome from all the states in Nigeria. However, students must be able to reach our offices in Abuja or Lagos on a monthly basis during the program for full participation.
Participants will work with our EducationUSA Advisors from June 2019 – August 2020 to try to secure places and financial assistance to begin study in the U.S. in August 2020.
EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program Requirements.
- Complete Application Form
- Academic Results:
Undergraduate Applicants– Attach a copy of your WAEC “O” Level results (from WAEC website). Include Cambridge A’Level or IGSCE results if applicable or available.
Graduate Applicants– Attach a copy of your Final year results and degree results (if available) First Class only (STEM majors preferred).
- Letters of recommendation:
Undergraduate Applicants: Request a teacher or your school principal to complete a letter of recommendation form, attesting to your character, talent and skills. Please do not include a basic testimonial that does not talk about you as an individual.
Graduate Applicants: Provide the details of a lecturer, professor, or Head of Department (HOD) that we can contact to find out more about you. - Transcript:
Undergraduate Applicants: Send a scanned copy of your transcript from JS1 to SS3 including your mock and first term results, if possible.
Graduate Applicants– Send a scanned copy of your transcripts that show a GPA of 4.5 or above on a 5.0 scale. - Essays:
Write two essays, one from Group A and one from Group B, each of about 250 – 300 words. The essay topics will be on the application form you receive. (Essay topics will be found on the form)
EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program Selection Criteria.
The selection of finalists for OFP is highly competitive, given limited funding. We look for applicants with:
- Strong academic record/ transcript
- Robust participation in extracurricular activities
- Involvement in leadership roles
- Excellent community service participation
- Financial Need
NOTE: Undergraduate Applicants– If WAEC results are not available; the student must be currently in SS3. If WAEC results are available, they must be from May/June WAEC.
Students who have already started a University education are NOT eligible to apply.

National Life Science Competition
The Science Communication Hub Nigeria is now accepting submissions from Nigerian secondary school and tertiary institution students for its 2021 National Life Science Competition.
The National Life Science Competition is aimed at inspiring all Nigerian secondary school and tertiary institution students to develop interests in life science courses or solving life science-related societal challenges.
National Life Science Competition Categories
- Tertiary Institution Category: For students in Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities studying any subject.
- Secondary School category: Open to all Nigerian secondary school students
National Life Science Competition Prizes
For each category:
- 1st position — ₦100, 000
- 2nd position — ₦75, 000
- 3rd position — ₦50, 000
Special Prizes:
- The Professor Isa Hussaini Marte Young Life Scientist Award — ₦100, 000
- The Professor Omowunmi Agboola Sadik Prize in Innovation — ₦100, 000

- Finalists and winners will receive certificates of commendation.
- Finalists and winners will be paired with experts for long term mentorship.
- Winners will receive training organised by Sprint for Social Good (SfSG) on ‘creativity and innovation’. They will be guided to apply skills learnt to develop their ideas and potential to be the future scientists of Africa and shape socio-economic development.
Timelines:
Phase 1 (29th March – 30th April 2021)
- Pre-qualification test: Please CLICK HERE to start the test. Participants with the highest score will be contacted with instructions on the next phase of the competition.
Phase 2 (10th May – 7th June 2021)
- Submission of Essays: Qualified participants will be required to submit a 400 – 500 words essay on the role of societies and communities in tackling pandemics. Depending on the discipline or area of interest of a participant, we want to see essays that put clear thoughts on: What can I do as an individual? Historian? Scientist? Medical practitioner? Engineer? Lawyer? IT Professional? Businessman? Government official? Entrepreneur? Innovator? Etc. We believe that all disciplines have their unique ways of tackling pandemics.
Phase 3 (3rd – 4th July 2021)
- Life science pitch to be held online, followed by the selection of winners and award ceremony.

How to Participate in National Life Science Competition
- You will need to register with your Name, Email, School, Present level of study and state of Origin. Note: All detail you provide shall be verified. Giving false information will lead to automatic disqualification. The personal data collected will only be used for the competition.
- You can only take the quiz/test once. Duplicate submissions will be disqualified automatically.
- The test duration is 30 minutes. Endeavour to submit within the stipulated time.
- You are advised to ensure that the quality of your Internet is good to avoid disruption.

Offa Development Foundation Scholarship Bursary Awards 2021
Offa Development Foundation Scholarship Bursary Awards 2021 is open for application. Sons and daughters of Offa that are students from Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education are eligible to apply for this scholarship/bursary awards.
The deadline for the submission of applications for the ODF Scholarship/Bursary is the 15th of April 2021.
Offa Development Foundation Scholarship Bursary Awards
Offa Development Foundation (ODF) is now accepting applications from indigenes of Offa, Kwara State, for its 2021 Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education Scholarship/Bursary Awards.
Applications are invited from full-time students who are in, or currently going to, 300 level (Degree) and 1st year (HND), and who are pursuing courses in any discipline in Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.
How to Apply ODF Scholarship/Bursary Awards
To start your scholarship application,
You must be user of google account (Gmail).
Interested candidates should fill the application form online and upload scanned copies of the following documents:
- recent passport photograph.
- copy of the certificate of Offa indigeneship.
- Scanned copy of the current academic transcript from the Institution. If not available, upload a statement of result from the Institution’s portal.
All sections of the application form must be completed correctly and all requested documents to be uploaded as indicated no later than 15th of April 2021.
Any wrong information about qualifications and Offa Indegeneship may render the applicant ineligible for the award.
