Technovation Challenge for Girls 2019
Brief Description:
Technovation offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the skills they need to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Every year we invite girls to identify a problem in their community, and then challenge them to solve it. Recommended Posts:
Girls work in teams to build both a mobile app and a business plan to launch that app, supported by mentors and guided by our curriculum.
Technovation’s curriculum takes students through 4 stages of launching a mobile app startup, inspired by the principles of design thinking:
- Ideation : Identify a problem in the community
- Technology : Develop a mobile app solution
- Entrepreneurship : Build a business plan to launch the app
- Pitch : Bring the business to market
Technovation Challenge Eligibility.
- To be eligible to participate in Technovation as a student, you must be between the ages of 10 to 18 as of August 1, 2019 and identify as female.
- To be fully registered, you must form or join a team. Teams can range in size from 1-5 girls. No more than 5 girls are allowed to join a team. You can only join one team.
Your team’s division – Junior or Senior – depends on the age of all team members.
- Junior Division: Team members are between 10-14 years old as of August 1, 2019
- Senior Division: Team members are between 15-18 years old as of August 1, 2019
STUDENTS
- In order to participate, all students must be between the ages of 10 to 18 as of August 1, 2019.
- All students must identify as female. No males can enter the competition.
- Teams are composed of 1 to 5 students. No more than 5 students are allowed to join a team.
- Students can only join 1 team.
- Divisions are based on the age of the oldest student on the team.
MENTORS
Note: These are the general rules for Technovation mentors. Please check with your local Regional Ambassador if there any rules that are specific to your region.
- Mentors must be over the age of 18, unless special permission is granted from Technovation.
- Mentors can be Technovation alumni.
- Mentors can join more than one team.
- In order to submit, mentors will need to complete their profile which includes:
- Consent form
- Background Check (if applicable)
- Bio completed
- Mentors/adults cannot write/produce any part of the submission for the students. This includes writing the code, writing the business plan, or producing the pitch video/demo video.
- Mentors cannot take credit for students’ work, use students’ work to their advantage, or copy/reproduce ideas without the explicit permission of all team members.
- Mentors may be allowed to become virtual judges but will not be allowed to judge submissions from their region.
- Mentors cannot receive any part of the student’s prize money if their team wins. It is intended for students only.
Students cannot ask mentors to code their app for them, write their business plan, or produce their pitch/demo video. All such submissions will be ineligible for the competition.
Technovation Challenge Cost & Benefits.
The Technovation curriculum is FREE. All you need is up to five middle school or high school girls, a safe place to meet, a laptop with internet. Teams may purchase smartphones to test the apps they create, but this can also be done in a limited way through a web-based phone emulator on App Inventor.

How to Register for Technovation Challenge.
Register by creating an account on my.technovationchallenge.org. Every individual student/mentor needs to register in order to join a team and submit.
You need an email address to register an account on my.technovationchallenge.org. Each account requires a unique email address.
Steps to register:
- Go to http://technovationchallenge.org/
- Click on Sign-up
- Enter the email and password and age. Once you click submit, it will bring you to a page where you will be able to see your STUDENT or MENTOR profile prompt based on your age.
- One you confirm your location, you will be registered
- This will take you to your dashboard where you will have a list of items to get done before you can join a team as either a student or a mentor.

This annual essay contest is organized in an effort to harness the energy, creativity and initiative of the world’s youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development.
It also aims to inspire society to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference in the world.

“What is Life?”
What does life mean to you? Have you had an experience that made you think about the meaning of life? What kinds of things can you do to cherish and invigorate your own life and all life on earth?
Goi Peace Foundation International Essay Contest Eligibility
- Essays may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old (as of June 15, 2021) in one of the following age categories:
- Children (ages up to 14)
- Youth (ages 15 – 25)
- Essays must be 700 words or less in English or French, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese. Essays must be typed, with your name and essay title included at the top of the first page.
- There are no particular rules regarding formatting (font style, size, line space, etc.). However, essays must be submitted in either MS Word (DOC/DOCX) or PDF format.
- Teachers and youth directors may submit a collection of essays from their class or group by creating an ‘account for school/organization entrant’ on the online registration page.
- Essays must be original and unpublished. Plagiarized entries will be rejected.
- Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
- Copyright of the essays entered will be assigned to the organizer.
Goi Peace Foundation International Essay Contest Prizes
The following awards will be given in the Children’s category and Youth category respectively:
- 1st Prize: Certificate, prize of 100,000 Yen (approx. US$900 as of March 2021) and gift for 1 entrant.
- 2nd Prize: Certificate, prize of 50,000 Yen (approx. US$450 as of March 2021) and gift for 3 entrants.
- 3rd Prize: Certificate and gift for 5 entrants.
- Honorable Mention: Certificate and gift for 25 entrants.
Also,
- 1st to 3rd prize winners will be invited to the Winners Gathering to be held online.
- Additional awards (Best School Award, School Incentive Award) will be given if applicable.
- All prize winners will be announced on October 31, 2021 (Japan time) on this website. Certificates and gifts will be mailed to the winners in December 2021.

National Life Science Competition
The Science Communication Hub Nigeria is now accepting submissions from Nigerian secondary school and tertiary institution students for its 2021 National Life Science Competition.
The National Life Science Competition is aimed at inspiring all Nigerian secondary school and tertiary institution students to develop interests in life science courses or solving life science-related societal challenges.
National Life Science Competition Categories
- Tertiary Institution Category: For students in Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities studying any subject.
- Secondary School category: Open to all Nigerian secondary school students

Timelines:
Phase 1 (29th March – 30th April 2021)
- Pre-qualification test: Please CLICK HERE to start the test. Participants with the highest score will be contacted with instructions on the next phase of the competition.
Phase 2 (10th May – 7th June 2021)
- Submission of Essays: Qualified participants will be required to submit a 400 – 500 words essay on the role of societies and communities in tackling pandemics. Depending on the discipline or area of interest of a participant, we want to see essays that put clear thoughts on: What can I do as an individual? Historian? Scientist? Medical practitioner? Engineer? Lawyer? IT Professional? Businessman? Government official? Entrepreneur? Innovator? Etc. We believe that all disciplines have their unique ways of tackling pandemics.
Phase 3 (3rd – 4th July 2021)
- Life science pitch to be held online, followed by the selection of winners and award ceremony.

How to Participate in National Life Science Competition
- You will need to register with your Name, Email, School, Present level of study and state of Origin. Note: All detail you provide shall be verified. Giving false information will lead to automatic disqualification. The personal data collected will only be used for the competition.
- You can only take the quiz/test once. Duplicate submissions will be disqualified automatically.
- The test duration is 30 minutes. Endeavour to submit within the stipulated time.
- You are advised to ensure that the quality of your Internet is good to avoid disruption.

- The Essay is submitted by an African Youth of age 18-35 years and who is a citizen of any of the 55 member states of African Union
- African Youth residing either in Africa or in the diaspora
- The Essay has a maximum of a 1000 words
- Young women are highly encouraged to participate in the competition
- The Essay is submitted in PDF to the email: essay@youlead.africa
- Submit a copy of your national ID or passport
- The Essay should be submitted in one of the official African Union languages.
